Your Excellency

I am horrified to learn that on the 9th and 10th of December 1998, two more bodies of prominent writers were found in Tehran, Iran. Mr. MOHAMMAD MOKHTARI and MOHAMMAD JAFAR POOYANDEH, two influential intellectuals, were abducted on the first week of December and their tortured and strangulated bodies later identified in a morgue in Tehran by their relatives.

On November 21st, 1998, Mr. DARIOUSH FOROUHAR, and his wife Mrs. PARVANEH ESKANDARI two prominent opposition leaders, were stabbed to death in their home in Tehran and their bodies were mutilated. Mr. Forouhar was an advisor to Prime Minister Dr. Mosaddegh in the 1950s and held the position of Minister of Labour and Social Security in the Islamic Republic of Iran until 1980. Two days before these brutal murders, Dr. MAJID SHARIF, a philosopher and writer, had disappeared, and his body was identified on November 24th, 1998 by his family in a morgue in Tehran. Meanwhile Mr. PIROUZ DAVAANI, a journalist and human rights activist, has been missing since August 1998 and Mr. ABBAS AMIR ENTEZAM, the spokesman for the first Cabinet of the Islamic Republic of Iran, has once again been arrested two months ago for expressing his opinion regarding the regime. I would also like to draw your attention to Mr. ALI TAVASSOLI, former member of the leadership of the Organisation of Iranian People’s Fadaian (Majority), who was kidnapped from Baku, Azerbaijan, and jailed in Evin prison in Tehran in September 1995. No formal information has been released about his present whereabouts.

In addition to these violent acts, in the last two months the terrorist groups within the Islamic Republic of Iran have become increasingly brutal and repressive against minorities, including the followers of the Bahais.

This new wave of terror in Iran began when the statement of Mr. Rahim Safavi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Revolutionary Corps of the Islamic Republic of Iran, was leaked to the newspapers, vowing to silence the critics of the regime by "cutting their tongues off and/or beheading them". Rumours are circulating up and down the country about a long list, which has been prepared targeting dissident political leaders, writers, journalists, intellectuals, and human rights activists to be assassinated.

In the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Human Rights Declaration such savagery and acts of state terrorism should not be tolerated. I am extremely concerned about these vicious acts, I hope you and your organisation express your outrage to the Islamic Republic of Iran and undertake any means possible to stop the harassing, torturing, kidnapping, and killing of Iranian intellectuals and political dissidents.

I am grateful for your understanding and appreciate your sincerity.
